HAMMOND, La. – The No. 14-ranked Ragin' Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette used a pair of big innings to top the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team, 15-8, Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in the front end of back-to-back midweek contests between the two programs.
After picking up a run in the first inning, the Ragin' Cajuns (29-9) erupted for seven runs in the second.
Jake Killingsworth led off the bottom of the second for Southeastern (19-18) with a towering blast to left. The solo shot was his third of the season.
The Ragin' Cajuns, however, responded with four more runs in the third, climbing out to a 12-1 lead.
SLU picked up an unearned run in the fifth, but UL Lafayette responded with two unearned runs of their own in the sixth.
Down 14-2, the Lions erupted for six in the seventh. Four Southeastern pinch hitters delivered singles and
TJ Salvaggio capped it off with the Lions' fourth grand slam of the season. The home run was the eighth of the season for Salvaggio, tying him with the injured
Justin Williams for the most on the squad.
A solo homer in the eighth by the Ragin' Cajuns completed the scoring.
JT Etheridge (2-2) earned the win, allowing one run in 4.0 innings of work. He scattered two hits and two walks, striking out eight batters.
Will Kinzeler (1-4) took the loss, allowing six runs – all earned – in 1.1 innings of work.
The start was the 47
th of Kinzeler's career, moving him into sole possession of third place on the SLU career charts behind former Olympian and Major Leaguer Jeff Williams (48, 1992-96) and Brandon Efferson (49, 2008-11).
Rhett Rosevear drew the 116
th walk of his career, a total that ranks second in program history. He trails all-time leader Kenny Langlois (119, 1993-96) by three. Rosevear also ranks second in career on-base percentage (.471) behind Jameson Fisher (.483, 2013-14, 2016).
Gray Rowlett (2-for-2) turned in a multi-hit performance after pinch-hitting in the seventh.
