Lamar Completes Sweep of Lions

BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar scored five runs in the fourth inning Sunday, holding on for an 8-2 Southland Conference victory over the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team to complete the series sweep at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Southeastern (19-17, 3-9 SLC) struck first, scoring an unearned run in the third against the Cardinals (29-6, 8-1 SLC).

Parker Coley drew a one-out walk, advancing to third on Rhett Rosevear's two-out single to right field. Coley scored when Lamar starting pitcher Hunter Hesseltine lobbed an errant pickoff throw to first in an attempt to keep Rosevear close.

The Cardinals took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by second baseman Drake Varnado. It was both his second of the series and the season.

Following the five-run fourth, SLU cut a run off the deficit in the fifth on a solo home run off the bat of Coley. The one-out blast was his fourth of the season.

Lamar got the run back sixth.

Hesseltine (4-0) picked up the win, allowing two runs – one earned – in 6.2 innings of work. He scattered three hits and one walk, striking out four batters. Lakin Polk (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing three runs – two earned – in 3.0 innings of work. Polk was making the first start of his SLU career following 22 consecutive relief appearances.
