Lamar Wipes Out Early SLU Lead

BEAUMONT, Texas – League-leading Lamar wiped out an early lead by the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team Saturday on the way to a 10-3 Southland Conference victory over the Lions at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

Southeastern (19-16, 3-8 SLC) built up a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Bailyn Sorensen led off the third with a home run down the left-field line. The solo shot was the fourth homer of the season for the junior out of Rayville, Louisiana.

SLU scratched across two more runs in the fourth.

Shea Thomas drew a walk to lead off the frame. He was erased on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Jake Killingsworth. Jake Haze followed with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners with one down. Third baseman Jeremy Rader plated Killingsworth with an RBI single to right-center. Christian Garcia plated Haze with a squeeze bunt.

Lamar (28-6, 7-1 SLC) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and SLU opted to bring in Levi Bennet from the bullpen to record the final out of the inning.

The Cardinals struck for four more runs in the fifth, taking the lead on a two-run homer by cleanup hitter River Orsak. It was his team-leading eighth of the season. Four more runs in the eighth wrapped up the scoring.

Jacob Ellis (6-0), who tossed a no-hitter the last time out, picked up the win. He allowed three runs – all earned – in 5.2 innings pitched. Jackson Cleveland finished off the game with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his third save of the season. Bennett (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – all earned – in 1.0 inning of relief work.

Haze (2-for-3) and Sorensen (2-for-4) turned in mult-hit performances at the plate for Southeastern.
