HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over Loyola (N.O.) in nonconference action Tuesday evening at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
SLU (3-4) rallied after dropping the doubles point to earn its second straight victory. Loyola, ranked 15
th nationally in the latest NAIA rankings, fell to 0-2 overall.
"This was all about our fight and the heart of our team," Southeastern head tennis coach
Jason Hayes said. "Loyola is a good, well-coached team. We made a lot of mistakes early, but we kept battling. We'll get smarter with more experience, but if we play with this fight moving forward good things will happen for us."
Loyola took a tightly-contested doubles point. The Southeastern pair of
Alba Perez and
Bogi Csordas (3-3) earned a 6-3 victory over Adele Fereres and Chloe Henderson on court 3. However, the Wolfpack answered with wins on courts 1 and 2 to take a 1-0 lead.
Southeastern's
Kate Oborina (3-0) remained undefeated in singles play with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Henderson on No. 4. Loyola earned a straight-set win on court 5, but the other four singles matches went to three sets.
On No. 1, Perez (1-5) outlasted Lucy Carpenter, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. SLU sophomore
Panatchakorn Suanarsa (3-3) rallied past Avery Frierson, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on No. 6.
Leana Gomez clinched the victory for the Lions with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory on court 2.
Southeastern will look to even its overall record Thursday, hosting Southern at 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
