Southeastern Rallies Past SLC Foe Bryant

Gomez, Oborina, Bierma and Suanarsa lead SLU to 4-3 victory with singles wins

NEWARK, N.J. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team earned a 4-3 comeback victory over Southland Conference foe Bryant Sunday morning at the Naimoli Center.

Southeastern (2-4) bounced back from dropping the doubles point, as Leana Gomez, Kate Oborina, Bente Bierma and Panatchakorn Suanarsa earned singles victories. The win over Bryant (0-4) does not count in the SLC standings, but could affect seeding in the conference tournament.

"We've played so hard each time out and today the key points went our way," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "I'm so proud of how hard our players fought and the support they showed for one another."

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead after a tightly-contested doubles point. The SLU pair of Suanarsa and Taisia Bolsova (3-2) won its third straight match, defeating Lisa Marie Dugec and Olivia Rondini, 6-2.

Bryant answered with a 6-2 win on court 1. The point came down to No. 3, where BU's Majo Hernandez Diaz and Yahli Noy outlasted Southeastern's Bogi Csordas and Alba Perez, 7-6 (10-8).

Gomez (2-2) earned a straight-set victory on court 2 in singles play, sweeping past Noy, 6-4, 6-3. Bryant countered with a straight-set victory on No. 6, but the other four matches went to a third set.

On No. 1, Bryant's Natalia Vela rallied past Perez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Bierma (3-3) answered for the Lions on court 4, handling Rondini, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The other two singles wins saw Southeastern bounce back from a set down.

On No. 3, Oborina (2-0) rallied past Caitlyn Munson for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory. Suanarsa handed Diaz a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat on court 4 to secure the victory.

"We had to win four singles matches, including three featuring tight third sets after a tough doubles point," Hayes said. "Today was a good indication of how much fight this team has."

Southeastern will return to action Feb. 20, hosting Loyola New Orleans at 5 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
