SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana University's
Carla Del Barrio and
Kate Oborina picked up singles wins, but it was not enough as the Lion women's tennis team fell, 5-2, at UIW in a Southland Conference match Sunday afternoon at the Mabry Tennis Center.
SLU fell to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in Southland Conference play. UIW ran its record to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in league action.
"It's tough to start conference play with the top two teams on the road," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We had a lot of close matches both days and we continue to play hard and with heart. When we can get everyone clicking on the same day, we will be a factor."
UIW took the early lead in doubles play with wins on courts 1 and 3. In singles play, the Cardinals earned straight-set victories on the bottom two courts with all of the remaining four singles matches being settled in three sets.
Oborina (6-5, 1-1 SLC) outlasted Gargi Pawar, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 on No. 4. On court 3, Del Barrio (6-6, 1-1 SLC) took a 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (6-8), 10-6 decision over Amelie Montalvo.
On the feature court, SLU's
Putri Insani saw Brandelyn Fulgenzi get past her for a 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 win. Estefania Gonzalez bested Lion
Gabrielle Dekkers, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, on the No. 2 court.
Southeastern will return home to host McNeese Friday for a 10 a.m. Southland Conference match at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
