SLU Tops McNeese, 6-1, for First SLC Win

Southeastern improves to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in Southland play with victory over Cowgirls (12-3, 2-1 SLC)

HAMMOND, La. – Flory Bierma, Putri Insani, Gabrielle Dekkers and Carla Del Barrio each won in both singles and doubles play to lead the Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team to a 6-1 Southland Conference victory over McNeese Thursday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
 
Southeastern (7-7, 1-2 SLC) took the doubles point and won five of singles matches on the way to its first Southland Conference victory of the spring. McNeese fell to 12-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
 
The Lions opened the match with a pair of doubles wins to take a 1-0 lead. On court 2, Dekkers and Del Barrio (5-3, 2-1 SLC) handed the Cowgirl duo of Natalia Ballo and Luna Jokanovic a 6-2 defeat. Bierma and Insani (8-4, 2-1 SLC) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over McNeese's Tiana Fox and Emma-Lou Pommiers on No. 1.
 
McNeese evened the match with a straight-set victory on court 5, but it was all Southeastern from that point forward. Insani (9-3, 1-2 SLC) gave the Lions the lead for good with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pommiers on the top singles court.
 
Kate Oborina (7-5, 2-1 SLC) handled Ballo, 6-4, 6-4, on No. 4 to extend the SLU advantage to 3-1. Minutes later, Dekkers (7-4, 1-2 SLC) clinched the win for Southeastern with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Heta Nuutinen on court 2.
 
The final two singles matches went to a third set. Del Barrio (7-6, 2-1 SLC) took down Fox, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on No. 5.
 
Bierma (6-6, 1-2 SLC) provided the final margin for the Lions. The Kapelle, The Netherlands native outlasted Jokanovic, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, on court 6 to close out the Lions' first SLC win of the spring.
 
Southeastern will continue its four-match conference home stand Tuesday, hosting Lamar at 10 a.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
