CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
Southeastern fell to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in league action, while the host Islanders improved to 14-2 overall and 1-0 in Southland Conference play.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took a very competitive doubles point. On court 1, the SLU duo of
Flory Bierma and
Putri Insani (7-3) took down Naomi Moi McKenzie and Sofia Pinto, 6-2. The Islanders evened it up with a 6-4 win on No. 3, then the TAMU-CC pair of Emma Aucagne and Palina Saulevich outlasted Lions
Gabrielle Dekkers and
Carla Del Barrio, 7-6 (7-5).
The Islanders clinched the match with straight-set victories on courts 3,5 and 6. The other three singles matches were settled in super tie-breakers with TAMU-CC rallying from a set down on each court.
On No. 1, Insani dropped a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 decision to Aucagne. McKenzie ended Dekkers' five-match singles win streak with a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 win on court 2. The Islanders completed the shutout on No. 4, as Valeria Cherfus defeated
Kate Oborina, 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Southeastern will look to bounce back Sunday, when it faces UIW in a 10 a.m. conference match in San Antonio, Texas.
