Southeastern Shuts Out Dillard for First Win of Spring

SLU returns to the court Saturday for a 1 p.m. match at Southern

HAMMOND, La.  – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's tennis team earned its first win of the spring, defeating Dillard, 7-0, in nonconference action Monday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions (1-3) swept all three doubles matches and each of the six singles matches to earn their first win of 2023.

"Today's win over a well-coached Dillard team continues our positive momentum that we've been on over the past several matches," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "If we continue to fight and play with a positive attitude, this should be the first of many wins for us this spring."

SLU's No. 1 doubles team of Putri Insani and Flory Bierma (2-2) picked up the first win of the day, defeating the Dillard pair of Kaavya Palani and Truc Tran, 6-1. On court 3, Southeastern's Bogi Csordas and Nadia Hitzman (1-1) clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Valentina Gomez and Daria Shchoma.

Southeastern completed the sweep on court 2, as the Lion pair of Gabrielle Dekkers and Panatchakorn Suanarsa rallied from a 5-3 deficit to defeat the Bleu Devil duo of Brunella Gomez and Anja Hrblijian, 7-6 (7-2).

Alba Perez (1-1) extended the lead to 2-0 with her first dual-match singles victory as a Lion. The transfer from Lamar handled Valentina Gomez, 6-1, 6-0 on court 5.

On No. 6, Bierma (2-2) made it 3-0 moments later, completing a 6-0, 6-2 win over Shchoma. Carla Del Barrio (3-1) extended her singles win streak on No. 3 to three matches, clinching the team's victory with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Tran.

Kate Oborina (1-3) and Dekkers (2-2) extended the lead to 6-0 with matching 6-2, 6-2 triumphs on courts 4 and 2, respectively. Insani (4-0) completed the shutout, maintaining her perfect spring singles record with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Palani on the top singles court.

Southeastern will be back in action Saturday, traveling to Southern for a 1 p.m. match in Baton Rouge.
