HAMMOND, La. – Putri Insani and
Carla Del Barrio each earned singles victories, as Southeastern Louisiana University tested unbeaten South Alabama in a 5-2 nonconference loss Saturday afternoon on the USA campus.
Southeastern (0-3) saw each of the top three singles matches go to three sets in its battle with the unblemished Jaguars (8-0). SLU head coach
Jason Hayes continues to be pleased by the progress shown by his Lions.
"We continue to improve every time out," Hayes commented. "We had a chance to test ourselves against a very good team in a great atmosphere for college tennis. I'm very pleased with where we are as a team."
In doubles play, Insani and
Flory Bierma took down USA's Luminita Tutunaru and Tereza Dejnozkova, 6-2, on the No. 1 court. The Jaguars answered with wins on courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.
Straight-set victories on the bottom three courts clinched the match for South Alabama. Southeastern got on the board after Insani (3-0) handed Tutunaru her first singles loss of the spring, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Del Barrio (2-1) earned SLU's second point, outlasting Delien Kleinhans for a 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 victory. Lion
Gabrielle Dekkers nearly gave Southeastern a third point, but Nikola Novotna fought off four match points for a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win.
Southeastern will return home Monday, hosting Dillard at 2 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
