LAFAYETTE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University's
Putri Insani,
Carla Del Barrio and
Flory Bierma all earned singles win in Sunday's spring road opener at UL Lafayette.
For the second time this spring, SLU (0-2) dropped the doubles point and split the six singles matches. UL Lafayette (2-2) claimed a three-set decision on the No. 2 singles court to earn the hard-fought victory.
"We played hard and our attitude was perfect," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "This was a great tennis match and I was very pleased to see the progress we've made since the opener."
The Ragin' Cajuns took a 1-0 lead with wins on the top two doubles courts. UL Lafayette would stretch the advantage to 2-0 in singles play with a straight-set victory on court 4.
Del Barrio put Southeastern on the board with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cristina Tchanichev on No. 3. The Ragin' Cajuns answered with a win on No. 6 to put themselves one point from victory.
Bierma pulled SLU within, 3-2, with a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 victory on court 5 over Momoko Yoshimura. Insani would even the match on No. 1, climbing from a set down to defeat Carla Urchoeguia, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The match would be settled on the No. 2 singles court. Southeastern's
Gabrielle Dekkers forced a third set, but ultimately dropped a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 decision to Lucie Raquin to give the Ragin' Cajuns the victory.
Southeastern will return to action Saturday, traveling to South Alabama for a 1 p.m. match in Mobile, Alabama.
