Southeastern Suffers Tough Loss Against Tulsa

The Lady Lions fall by one point against Tulsa to end non-conference play in Maui, Hawaii.

Maui, HI – The reigning Southland Conference champion Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team fell to Tulsa 48-47 Wednesday evening for its final game in the Maui Classic hosted at Seabury Hall.

Southeastern (4-7) came out the gate with energy and gained a 4-0 advantage early into the contest, holding the Golden Hurricanes to only 12 points to end the first quarter.

Taylor Bell led all scorers for the Lady Lions with 15 points. Tulsa could not contain Southeastern in the paint with a 28-16 advantage to end the night. Bell capitalized on her physicality in the paint along with her versatility around the high post to finish shooting 75.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Tulsa went on a 10-point scoring run late into the third quarter to cut into their 26-19 deficit coming out of halftime. The Golden Hurricanes gained their biggest lead in the game with three points over the Lady Lions. Delanie Crawford led Tulsa in scoring with 20 points and 11 rebounds to earn a double-double on the night. Temira Poindexter also contributed double digit scoring with 11 points and five rebounds. Crawford had the hot hand for Tulsa shooting 50.0 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three and 1.00 percent at the free-throw line.

SLU remained in control of the game for the majority of the second half, but the Golden Hurricanes momentum kept them in the game. The Lady Lions received a spark from Jalencia Pierre who scored the first four points of the game and the last bucket to give Southeastern a two point advantage with nine seconds on the clock. Pierre finished in double digits with 12 points and three assists. Cheyanne Daniels brought a spark off the bench finishing around the rim to earn nine points and secure 13 rebounds. The Lady Lions gained a one point advantage with seconds left on the clock, but a late foul allowed Tulsa to get the upper hand and close out the game at the free-throw line.

The Lady Lions will return to action to start off conference play on the road against Nicholls for a 6:30 p.m. matchup Jan. 4.
