BATON ROUGE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana University freshmen
Polina Paunova,
Bogi Csordas and
Jordan Burdett all earned singles victories to lead the SLU tennis team to a 4-1 nonconference victory over Southern Wednesday afternoon on the Southern campus.
Playing at as close to full strength as it has all spring, Southeastern (1-6) took the doubles point and claimed three singles victories to earn its first win of the 2022 campaign. The host Lady Jaguars fell to 1-7 overall.
"It was great to get this win," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We were especially happy to see Bogi and Jordan get their first singles wins (at SLU). We've been working hard and as we get back closer to full strength, I believe we have good things in our future."
Flory Bierma made her return from injury in doubles play, teaming with
Putri Insani for a 6-1 victory over the Southern pair of Kourtni Stewart and Paris Washington on the No. 1 court. SLU clinched the doubles point and 1-0 lead as Csordas and Paunova shut out SU's Nandi Munyulwa and Trinity Turner, 6-0, on No. 3.
In singles play, Paunova won her second match of the spring, defeating Stewart, 6-1, 6-0 on No. 3. On court 5, Csordas took down Munyulwa, 6-3, 6-0, while Burdett handled Turner, 6-2, 6-1 to put Southeastern in the win column.
The Lions will return to action on Sunday, facing Keiser University at 2 p.m. (Central) in Orlando, Florida.
