Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Southeastern Falls 63-55 at LSU

HAMMOND, La.  – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team gave LSU a run for their money before finishing the game 63-55 Tuesday night at the PMAC.

Southeastern's (4-3) Alexius Horne was the star of the show as she sunk a career high of 28 points against the 11th ranked team in the nation. Horne was 11 of 23 field goals and five turnovers. Chrissy Brown also stacked the stat sheet with six rebounds, three turnovers and one steal. Jalencia Pierre had two steals, two rebounds and an assist.

"Her work ethic is second to none," said Southeastern head coach Guzzardo commenting on Horne's performance, "And she is just a blue-collar tough kid. Everything she gets she works for and deserves."

LSU's Angel Reese led the Lady Tigers with 25 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Jasmine Carson also led LSU with 16 points, 10 rebounds, 6 turnovers and four assists.

Although the outcome wasn't the one that the Lady Lions wanted, Guzzardo couldn't be prouder of her staff and players. "We had a great game plan and our team executed. We gave everything we could and even though it wasn't enough for the actual victory, it was a victory in our book." She said.

Southeastern came off the bench hot with eight unanswered points that started with a layup by Taylor Bell before LSU was able to get in their first points. The whole first quarter, the Lady Lions had nine completions in 14 attempts with a 64.3% scoring average.

Southeastern faltered somewhat in the second quarter allowing LSU to pick up pace and score 22 points compared to their eight. LSU tied with the Lions in the first minute of the second quarter before taking the lead with a three-point jump-shot. Hailey Giaratano answered with a jump-shot in the paint.

The second half started out in Southeastern's favor as the Lady Lions came off the bench with a vengeance, scoring 17 points. Bell shot a fast break three pointer with 5:12 left in the third after it had been stolen by Horne, the ball was given to Pierre but ended in a missed layup. Horne was able to take hold of the ball again and would put up another lay-up, closing in the score 48-35 with 3:58 left in the third.

Giaratano opened up the fourth with a jump-shot. That was quickly followed by Horne as she sunk in a jumper with 7:32 left in the game. The competition was tense as LSU felt the pressure from the Lions. LSU put in a last-ditch effort that ended up being successful by putting Angel Reese on Horne. Reese ended up scoring the last few points until Jasmine Carson came in and completed a layup, ending the game 63-55 in Baton Rouge.

Southeastern will take a break until the Lady Lions face Prairieview A&M Tuesday Dec 13 at the University Center at 5:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on the women's basketball schedule page on www.LionsSports.net.
