Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Southeastern Suffers Second Road Loss Against San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif.  – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's basketball team fell in the third and final game of their week-long road trip against San Diego State 69-53 Tuesday night at Steve Fisher Court in Veijas Arena.

Southeastern (2-2) dropped their third road trip game of the season to San Diego State (4-1) after coming off a busy weekend in Utah after beating University of Utah and losing to Utah last week.

Southeastern senior Cierra Cunningham was at the top of the leaderboard for the Lady Lions with five assists. Sophomore Taylor Bell led the Lady Lions in scoring with 14 points during the game. Chrissy Brown led in rebounds with nine total rebounds, two of them being offense and the other seven being defensive side of the ball.

The Lady Lions suffered a valuable loss after losing their post player, senior Natalie Kelly, to a hand injury that was sustained during the game against Utah, so Daija Harvey came in and took her place.

"We had to play without our post (Kelly) so we were a little undersized but I felt that we did well guarding their bigs." Southeastern head coach Ayla Guzzardo said.

SLU led San Diego for 10:56 of the first half and their biggest lead was by seven points in the first quarter and were a solid team throughout the first quarter until three quarters of the way through the second quarter where the Lady Aztecs took over the lead and held the lead for the remainder of the game.

Mercedes Staples led San Diego in scoring with 18 points where she had a perfect 6-for-6 from the three. Asia Avinger also filled the stat sheet for the Lady Aztecs with 11 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.

Once half time was over, the Lady Lions came back on a 9-0 run to knock off the lead and were about to come back with a 51-50 score in the last two minutes of the third quarter but Southeastern couldn't execute.

"We had numerous opportunities to take control of the game but we struggled scoring around the rim. We just have to score the ball around the rim in the second and fourth quarters." Guzzardo commented on her teams lack of scoring.

The fourth quarter did not go as planned for the Lady Lions as they were only able to sink one three that was made by Harvey with 3:43 left in the fourth, making the score 69-53 to finish out the game while the Lady Aztecs ran out the clock with 16 unanswered points that gave the SDSU the win.

Next up for the Lady Lions is another road trip a little closer to home. They will be playing South Alabama Tuesday Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats can be accessed on the Southeastern women's basketball schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
