HAMMOND, La. – Following a one-out walk in the top of the seventh inning, Hammond native
Kenneth Bell, III worked his way around the bases to score the eventual winning run in Friday evening's 6-5 final at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Advancing to second base on a balk by reliever
Kyle Flettrich (0-1), Bell stole third and later came home to score on a wild pitch by reliever Gage Trahan. The run pushed Team GATA over the top in a back-and-forth contest with Team Mamba. Earlier in the scrimmage, senior transfer Gaby Cruz wiped out an early lead by Team GATA with a three-run home run to right-center field.
Tyler Finke led all players with a 3-for-5 night at the plate and three stolen bases for Team GATA.
Nick Ray drove in a pair of runs for Team Mamba in the sixth with a scorching double over the head of the center fielder.
Freshman right-hander
Christian White (1-0) earned the win, tossing a pair of innings in relief. Flettrich suffered the loss, allowing two runs – one earned – in 1.2 innings of work.
Trey Shaffer did not factor in the decision despite allowing just one hit in three scoreless innings, striking out five.
