First Inning Proves Costly for Lions

MONROE, La. – A first-inning momentum swing proved costly Tuesday night for Southeastern Louisiana as the Lions dropped an 8-4 decision to ULM at Warhawk Field.

The first three batters of the game reached for Southeastern (3-4), loading the bases on a pair of ULM (6-1) errors and a hit batter before Warhawk second baseman Wiley Cleland robbed Champ Artigues of a run-scoring hit and turned the line drive into a double play.

Following an inning-ending strikeout, ULM turned the momentum into five runs in the bottom of the inning and never looked back.

Southeastern loaded the bases once again in the third, failing to score a run.

The Lions cut into the deficit in the fourth, scoring on a bases-loaded wild pitch. Later in the inning, Tyler Finke drove a two-out single to left field to score Nick Ray and Eli Johnson.

ULM got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning on a pair of walks, a pair of wild pitches and a fielder's choice grounder.

An RBI single by Johnson got the Lions a run closer, 6-4, but the Warhawks answered once again in the bottom of the inning with a pair of unearned runs off reliever Kyle Flettrich.

Tyler Lien (1-0), ULM's starting pitcher, earned the win in a short start. The left-hander allowed one run in three hitless innings. Landon Longsworth earned his second save with three hitless, scoreless innings to close out the game.

Lion starter Daniel Dugas (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – four earned – in 3.1 innings of work. The junior right-hander from Pearl River, Louisiana allowed seven hits and three walks, striking out four.
