ULM Defeats Lions

MONROE, La. – ULM used a pair of big innings to defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 23-5 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon at Warhawk Field, setting an NCAA record along the way.

For the second time in as many games, ULM (7-1) used a big first inning to take an early lead, batting around on the way to scoring four runs off starting pitcher Dalton Rogers.

The Lions (3-5) responded with a run in the second. Jacob Burke, a freshman from St. Francisville, Louisiana, drew a one-out walk and then stole second base. He scored on Connor Manola's two-out single up the middle.

Southeastern forced the Warhawks to the bullpen, taking the lead in the third.

Junior left fielder Matt Taylor drew a leadoff walk and then shortstop Evan Keller chopped a single over the head of the first baseman. With runners on the corners, Tyler Finke pulled an RBI double down the third-base line.

After Christian Garcia drew a walk, Champ Artigues lofted a sacrifice fly to right field. Keller scored and ULM brought reliever Dylan Marsh in from the bullpen. Burke then grounded out, plating Finke with the tying run, and Garcia scored on a wild pitch.

One of the biggest innings in NCAA history arrived in the bottom of the fourth, setting one record and narrowly missing a few others.

ULM sent 25 batters to the plate (one shy of the NCAA record) and scored 19 runs (one shy of the NCAA record for the fourth inning). Six Lion pitchers combined to issue 12 walks (new NCAA record), hit three batters and served up three home runs – including a pair of grand slams. The Warhawks picked up five hits and Southeastern committed a pair of errors.

The NCAA record for runs in an inning is 21 and the program record for runs allowed in a game is 25. In the game, Southeastern issued a program-record 15 walks and hit five batters.

Dylan Marsh (1-0) earned the win, tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. Dalton Aspholm (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in 1.1 innings of work. He allowed one hit and walked two.
