COLLEGE STATION, Texas – James Benson II set a school record in both the 200m and 400m for the Southeastern Louisiana Track and Field team Saturday at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Benson II, a sophomore, ran the 400m in a blazing 46.34. The Charleston, Illinois native also ran the 200m in 21.07 which broke Shannon Glover's record of 21.10 set March 3, 2012. Benson II, also a member of the SLU 4x400 relay team, is top ranked in the Southland in both the 200m and 400m going into the Southland Conference Indoor Championships next week. With his efforts in the 200m, Benson II is ranked 12
th in the nation.
"James continues to improve at a crazy rate," said SLU track head coach
Corey Mistretta. "He is very inquisitive in that he always asks questions to get better and is very competitive. We didn't run a ton of people this weekend but the ones that did shows us that we are in a good place going into next week's championship."
Senior
Johnathon Sawyer also made his mark Saturday for SLU. The Grambling transfer ran the 200m in 21.30 for a personal best. The Austin, Texas native ranks fourth in the conference in the event.
SLU was also in action Friday at the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge, Louisiana at Carl Maddox Field House with several good performances.
Slavko Stevic set a personal best in the high jump with a mark of 7 feet, 0.50 inches (2.15m). With his performance, the SLU freshman took the conference lead in the event.
Southeastern also got good showings in the 60m hurdles Friday.

Kimona Wilson and
Justin Taylor each set personal bests in the event.
Next up, Southeastern will get ready for the Southland Conference Indoor Championships which starts Sunday, March 1 in Birmingham, Alabama.
