Southeastern Finishes Regular Season Strong Saturday

SLU is set to prepare for the Southland Conference Championships in two weeks

MONROE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University men's and women's track & field teams competed at two sites Saturday, participating in the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Fla., at Visit Jax Track at Hodges Stadium, and the Warhawk Classic in Monroe, La., at Brown Stadium.

In Jacksonville, Onyah Favour was the sole SLU student-athlete at the East Coast Relays. The junior claimed second place in the 400-meter dash, clocking 52.01, a season-best mark and the 34th-best time in NCAA Division I, along with being the second-best time in the Southland Conference this season. Her 52.01 time is also the 21st-best mark among the top-48 performances in the NCAA East Region, putting her in strong position to qualify for the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ky., later this month.

In Monroe, the Lions totaled eight podium finishes at the Warhawk Classic, with Southeastern sending a smaller group to prepare for the upcoming Southland Conference Championships. On the men's side, Daniel Atinaya captured third with a 200-meter dash of 21.37. Darian Chestnut finished second in the 800-meter run, recording a 1:57.06 time.

On the field, Micah Miller and Porter Gibson earned first and second-place finishes in the discus throw, respectively. Miller ended the event with a 50.56-meter toss (165'10"). Gibson sent the discus for a distance of 48.42 meters (158'10"). Gerrit Visser placed third in the hammer throw with a mark of 59.04 meters (193'8"). Josh-Ty Brown and Gibson took second and third in the shot put. Brown earned a 16.43-meter mark (53'11"), while Gibson finished at a season-best 16.40 meters (53'10'). Julia Jenkins placed third for the Southeastern women, earning a 5.31-meter performance (17'5") in the long jump.

The Lions will take a break from competition next week while the team prepares for the Southland Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Nacogdoches, Texas, beginning on May 14.
