HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana pitchers issued a program-record 14 walks Tuesday in a 9-6 loss to UL Lafayette at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (1-2) managed to keep the score close early despite the high amount of foot traffic on the bases, trailing by one when UL Lafayette (1-3) batted around in the seventh inning and expanded its lead by five runs.
Champ Artigues drove in
Evan Keller with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and two runs scored on
Tyler Finke's single in the eighth, but Southeastern was unable to erase the deficit.
Starting pitcher
Dalton Rogers struggled with his control, walking 6 batters in 2.1 innings. The five relievers that followed did not fare much better.
Lion designated hitter
Jacob Burke led all players with three hits. The freshman from St. Francisville, Louisiana ripped a triple off the right-center field wall in the fourth inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly. He drove in one and scored another run on Finke's single.
Artigues also produced multiple hits, singling to lead off the sixth and coming around to score on Burke's run-scoring base knock.
Ragin' Cajun starting pitcher Brandon Young (1-0) earned the win, allowing three earned runs in 5.1 innings of work. The right-hander scattered 5 hits and three walks, striking out 10 batters. Connor Cooke worked a scoreless ninth to his first save of the season.
Lion reliever
Daniel Dugas (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. He surrendered five hits and three walks, striking out two.
Southeastern returns to action with three games at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field this coming weekend against Jacksonville. Game times are 6 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. The series finale is also a Cane's Challenge contest.
