Shaffer, Warren Dominate Again as Lions Win Series Opener

HAMMOND, La. – The Friday night combo of Trey Shaffer and Will Warren on the mound paid dividends once again for Southeastern Louisiana as the Lion hurlers combined to strike out 15 batters on the way to a 2-1 win over Jacksonville in the series opener at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Shaffer (2-0), a junior southpaw from Biloxi, Mississippi, battled through a bout of early wildness, settling in after allowing a first-inning run to the Dolphins (1-5). Despite walking in a run, he fanned three in the inning and seven through the first three.

The Lions (2-2) took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.

Junior shortstop Evan Keller led off the inning with a rocket single off the glove of the Jacksonville second baseman. After stealing second, he advanced to third on Tyler Finke's bunt single. Finke promptly stole second, putting a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs.

Champ Artigues and Preston Faulkner plated the runs with a pair of groundouts.

After retiring the leadoff batter in the sixth, Shaffer handed the ball and the lead over to Warren. The junior right-hander from Brandon, Mississippi allowed one baserunner of the final 3.2 innings – a leadoff double in the eighth.

Warren struck out the side in the seventh, and a pair of batters each in the final two innings, as he closed out the game for his second save of the season. Shaffer earned the win, tossing 5.1 innings and fanning eight.

Trent Palmer (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs in six innings of work. The hard-throwing righty scattered three hits and one walk, striking out 10 batters.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday. Sophomore right-hander Grant Upton (0-0, 0.00) heads to the bump, opposing Jacksonville righty Tyler Santana (0-0, 3.18).
