BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Louisiana track team returns to action Friday and Saturday in the Samford Open Indoor Meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex as 38 student-athletes will compete for SLU.
This weekend's meet is one of the final tune ups for Southeastern before the Southland Conference Indoor Championships Sunday and Monday March 1-2 in Birmingham. SLU will also compete in the LSU Twilight Friday, Feb. 21 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana before the indoor championships.
The men's 4x400 relay team highlights the weekend for SLU. The group of
James Benson III,
D.J. Ruffin,
Donovan Storr and
Johnathon Sawyer, who will be in action Saturday at 6 p.m., set the fifth fastest time in the nation in the event after running a 3:07.67 at the Carolina Challenge Feb. 1.
"We are really excited to take most of our conference team to Birmingham to get a look at the conference venue," said SLU track head coach
Corey Mistretta. "The training up to this point has been really good, so everyone is excited about seeing how things unfold this weekend. The distance group is specifically looking to improve on their conference positioning. It should be an exciting weekend for both the men and women."
