Sterling Earns LSWA Weekly Honors

Senior averaged 17.5 points per game in SLU's two Southland road wins last week

HAMMOND, La. – After helping Southeastern Louisiana to a pair of Southland Conference road victories, Lady Lion senior guard Celica Sterling was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the LSWA announced on Tuesday.
 
The weekly honor is the first of the Baton Rouge, Louisiana native's career. Sterling was previously named All-Southland Conference and All-Louisiana following her debut season in Hammond.
 
Sterling averaged 17.5 points and 2.5 steals per contest, while shooting 60.0 percent (12-for-20) from the floor, 62.5 percent from behind the arc (5-for-8) and 85.7 percent (6-for-7) from the free throw line in SLU's two wins. The Lady Lions opened the week with a 74-67 win at McNeese on Wednesday, followed by a 72-56 victory at Northwestern State.
 
Sterling finished with 18 points, leading four Lady Lions in double figures, in Southeastern's victory over the Cowgirls. She went the distance in Saturday's win in Natchitoches, leading SLU with 17 points and three steals.
 
Sterling has been an efficient scorer for the Lady Lions, ranking sixth in the Southland with 13.7 points per game. Sterling's 2.2 treys per contest is good for fourth in the conference and her 105 career three-point field goals represent the sixth-highest total in school history.

Aminat Jubril is Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Lagos, Nigeria native courtesy of PRIDE.
