Distance Runners Reign for SLU at LSU Purple Tiger Invitational

SLU Terrific in Season Opening Indoor Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. –
The distance runners had a spectacular day for the Southeastern Louisiana track team at the season-opening indoor meet Friday at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational at Carl Maddox Field House.

On the men's side, the Lions swept the one-mile race. SLU's Grant O'Callaghan, Shea Foster, Parker McBride and Thom Reynders took the top four spots in the race. O'Callaghan and Foster also claimed the top two spots in the 3k.
                                                                                                                  
The Lions also had an excellent showing in the men's 600m. SLU placed four in the top eight led by junior Johnathon Sawyer. The Grambling State transfer finished second setting a personal best of 1:22.98. James Benson II, Donovan Storr and Gerald Coleman placed fourth, fifth and eighth for the Lions.
 
Sophomore Cole Belkwell finished fourth in the weight throw setting a personal best with a mark of 54 feet, 9.25 inches (16.69m). Sophomore Ricardo Klotz also made his mark on the day finishing tied for first in the pole vault with a mark of 16-10.75 (5.15m).  Newcomer Slavko Stevic, who arrived on campus less than a week ago, won the high jump for SLU with a mark of 6-10.75 (2.10m).
 
SLU's day of personal records continued on the women's side as junior Sophie Daigle finished with a personal best in the one-mile race. The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native ran a 5:10.03. Taylor Mumford, a junior, also set a new mark in the 60m. The New Orleans, Louisiana product ran a 7.68 to best her previous mark of 7.75.
 
Kimona Wilson, a junior, also started the season on a good note. The native of Jamaica set a personal best in the 60m hurdles finishing in 9.05.
 
SLU's D.J. Ruffin, the reigning Southland Conference Indoor Athlete of the Year, was held out of the event after a minor Achilles injury.
 
"This is the best opening meet we've had in a long time collectively," said SLU track head coach Corey Mistretta. "Coming off a meet like this I feel it's going to get the kids excited and we will get some good training with a few weeks off until our next meet.
 
Next up, the Lions will compete in the McNeese Invitational II Indoor Meet Friday Jan. 31 in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
