NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana track team begins their quest for a title Friday at the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships at Walter P. Ledet Track Complex hosted by Northwestern State.
The three day event begins Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. with the women's 10,000m and wraps up Sunday at 3:35 p.m. with the men's 4x400 relay.
SLU's
Clarissa Smith will get things started for Southeastern at 7:30 a.m. Friday as she competes in the 10,000m. The senior from Holden, Louisiana, ranks third in the conference with a time of 39:56.85 set at the Louisiana Classics March 15.
Also for the women, Southland Conference Indoor shot put champion
Ashley Davis will look to defend her outdoor crown for SLU. The Watson, Louisiana native, will be action Friday morning at 10:30. The junior is currently ranked third in the Southland with a mark of 52 feet, 3.75 inches (15.94m).
Taylor Mumford could also make some noise for Southeastern. The freshman will compete in the women's 100m with the preliminaries Saturday at 3:45 p.m. The New Orleans, Louisiana native is ranked fourth in the Southland with a top mark of 11.86 she set March 22 at the Southeastern/Southern Dual.
Jamira Patterson, a freshman, will be in action in the women's 400m hurdles Saturday at 4:55 p.m. in the prelims. The Killeen, Texas native, is second in the Southland going into the weekend with a time of 1:01.22.
On the men's side, SLU's
Gerald Coleman leads the conference entering the weekend in the 400m hurdle. The junior ran a 51.94 at the Strawberry Relays March 2 in Hammond. The New Orleans native will be in the prelims Saturday at 5:20 p.m.
Donovan Storr could have a big weekend for the Lions. The junior is ranked sixth in the Southland in both the 200m (20.98) and 400m (47.28). The Andros, Bahamas native, is also part of the men's 4x400 team which ranks second in the conference (3:08.16). The 400m prelims are Saturday at 3:25 p.m. while the 200m is at 6:05 p.m.
Tahrike Jones will also compete in the 400m with Storr. The sophomore from Lutcher, Louisiana ranks seventh, with a 47.52. Jones, Coleman, Storr and
James Benson II will make up the 4X400 team.
Before that, freshman
Zach Barthel will begin things for the Lions in the men's 10,000m Friday morning at 8:10 a.m. The Kenner, Louisiana native, is seventh in the conference with a 33:29.56.
In the field,
Malik Burns could contend for the shot put championship. The sophomore ranks sixth in the Southland with a throw of 54-1 (16.48m). The Homer, Louisiana product, will be in action Saturday at 5 p.m.
Also in the field,
Cole Belkwell and
Michael Seither will compete in the hammer throw Friday at 10 a.m. Belkwell, a freshman, holds the number five spot in the conference with a mark of 197-7 (54.74m) while Seither, a senior, is ranked seventh (172-1, 52.46m).
