HAMMOND, La. – After a strong performance on the court and in the classroom, Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Katya Cornejo was selected to the 2019 Southland Conference Women's Tennis All-Academic Teams, which the league office announced on Thursday.

Cornejo, an Aguascalientes, Mexico native, was named to the second team. She entered the current semester with a 4.0 cumulative grade point average as an engineering technology major.

Last month, Cornejo and her doubles partner Flory Bierma were named All-Southland Conference at the No. 3 doubles position. The pair was 4-3 versus league opposition on the No. 3 court this spring.

In singles play, Cornejo's biggest win came in a 4-3 comeback victory over Stephen F. Austin. With the match tied 3-3, Cornejo rallied past SFA's Kyndall Misak for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph on the No. 6 court to give SLU the victory.

Southland Conference Player of the Year Sahaja Yamalapalli of Sam Houston State was named Student-Athlete of the Year. Yamalapalli's only league singles loss of the regular season came to SLU's Putri Insani and she carried a 4.0 GPA as a food science and nutrition major.

To be eligible for Southland All-Academic notice, student-athletes must carry a 3.0 GPA or higher and be in at least their second season at their current school. First team All-Southland and CoSIDA Academic All-District performers are automatic selections. The teams are voted on by head coaches, academic coordinators and sports information directors from the 13 league institutions.
