Southeastern Closes Regular Season With Three Key Southland Home Matches

Lions battling for Southland Conference Tournament berth

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team will close out its 2018-19 regular season with three home matches at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
 
The Lions (6-10, 3-5 Southland) open the final week with a 1 p.m. match on Friday versus Sam Houston State (12-6, 6-3 Southland). On Sunday, Stephen F. Austin (7-11, 3-6 Southland) comes to town for a noon match. Jambalaya will be served and Ceci Mercier will celebrate Senior Day in conjunction with Sunday's match.
 
SLU closes out the spring regular season with a 4 p.m. match versus New Orleans (10-9, 3-5 Southland) on Tuesday. Tuesday's match is a makeup of the April 5 match that was postponed.
 
Southeastern is battling with SFA and UNO for the final spots in the Southland Conference Tournament field. The top eight teams will advance to the league tournament, scheduled from April 25-27 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
 
The Lions are led in singles play by Putri Insani (8-5, 5-3 Southland) and Mercier (6-5, 3-4 Southland). The duo of Insani and Ximena Yanez (6-3, 4-1 Southland), as well as the pair of Mercier and Vicky Scholz (6-1, 6-1 Southland) pace SLU in doubles play.
 
Sam Houston State comes to town led by Sahaja Yamalapalli (15-3, 9-0 Southland), as the Bearkats feature five players with double-digit singles wins. The pairing of Petra Kaszas and Karla De La Luz Montalvo (5-4, 4-2 Southland) have SHSU's best doubles record.
 
SFA enters the weekend coming off an upset win of Northwestern State. The Ladyjacks' top singles player is Darinka Tiboldi (8-8, 4-4 Southland). In doubles play, Gabi Guilarte and Kaja Ljunic (9-8, 4-5) boast the team's best record.
 
New Orleans is led by Trang Dao (10-7, 3-5 Southland). Dao and Ank Vullings (11-4, 5-3 Southland) also comprise one of the league's top doubles teams.  
 
40 LOVE CLUB / S CLUB
Fans interested in becoming active supporters of the tennis program are encouraged to join the 40 Love Club. Lion tennis alums are encouraged to join the exclusive S Club, which is restricted to Southeastern athletic letter winners.
