Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 5, Southeastern Louisiana 2 - Results
BEAUMONT, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana's
Putri Insani won in singles and doubles play, but the Lions dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Southland Conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
Sunday's match between the Lions (5-8, 2-3 Southland) and the Islanders (10-3, 3-1 Southland) was a makeup of a match scheduled for earlier this month. Southland rules mandate matches postponed due to inclement weather be played at a neutral site.
Southeastern won the doubles point for the fifth time in as many league matches to take the early lead. However, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi rebounded by taking five of six singles matches – including three three-set victories.
"We fought hard and definitely had our chances today," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "I'm proud of our effort, but ultimately we didn't step up and win enough of the big points to beat a team the caliber of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi."
The Lions took a 1-0 lead thanks to their continued doubles dominance. On No. 2,
Ceci Mercier and
Vicky Scholz (5-0, 5-0 Southland) remained undefeated with a 6-3 win over the Islander duo of Myu Kageyama and Kei Kato. Insani and
Ximena Yanez (6-2, 4-0 Southland) clinched the point on the top court with a 7-6 (7-1) victory over Carolina Bulatovic and Mariya Shumeika.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took the lead with straight-set victories on the No. 3 and 4 courts. Insani (7-3, 4-1 Southland) knotted the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Bulatovic on No. 1. The three remaining singles matches were decided in three sets.
All three of the three-set singles matches saw SLU win the respective first sets. However, AMCC rallied for victories on all three courts. On No. 2, Yanez dropped a 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 6-2 decision to Kato.
SLU's
Flory Bierma was unable to hold off Kageyama on court 5 in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss. On No. 6, Lion
Katya Cornejo retired in the third set after splitting the first two sets with Maria Maldonado.
Southeastern will be back on the road next weekend, facing Central Arkansas on Friday at 1 p.m.
