Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Playing its first official home game of the 2019-20 season, the Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team used a balanced effort and a huge rebounding advantage to take down LSU Alexandria, 89-72, on Wednesday afternoon in the University Center.

Southeastern (2-4) outrebounded the visiting Lady Generals, 52-23, on the way to its second straight victory. The Lady Lions also posted season-highs for points, field goal percentage (53.1 – 34-for-64) and three-point field goal percentage (56.3 – 9-for-16) on the way to the win. The game counted as an exhibition for the Lady Generals.

"We knew LSUA was going to compete," Southeastern head coach Ayla Guzzardo said. "We were pleased with the offensive effort, but we've got to get better defensively, especially in transition, moving forward."

Celica Sterling led four Lady Lions in double figures with 23 points, while Charliee Dugas (16 points), Aminat Jubril (12 points) and Morgan Carrier (11 points) also contributed to the high-scoring output. Tyler Morrison finished with a team-high three assists.

"Anytime you can have multiple players in double figures, it should lead to a win," Guzzardo commented. "Aminat in particular did well taking advantage of the touches she was given and keeping possessions alive with her willingness to crash the offensive glass."

The Lady Lion rebounding effort was paced by Caitlyn Williams, who finished with nine rebounds. Jubril and Morrison added seven rebounds apiece. Dugas and Alexius Horne led SLU with two steals each.

"We knew we had a big size advantage and needed to crash the boards," Guzzardo said. "I thought we did a nice job giving ourselves extra possessions with our performance on the offensive boards. We needed it to, because it helped lessen the blow of our 23 turnovers."

LSU Alexandria was led by Kelsey Thaxton, who finished with a game-high 25 points. Former Lady Lion, St. Thomas Aquinas alum and Hammond native Courtney Dawsey added 14 points, while Kendriana Washington pitched in with 10 for the visiting Lady Generals.

A 12-0 first quarter run put Southeastern comfortably ahead, 14-3, as a Carrier trey gave the Lady Lions an 11-point lead with 6:10 left in the opening quarter. LSUA chiseled into the lead to head to the second quarter down, 24-17.

Southeastern shot 52.6 percent (10-for-19) from the field in the second quarter to extend its lead. The Lady Lions outscored the visitors, 23-10, to take commend and a 47-27 advantage into the halftime locker room.

SLU would grow the lead to as many as 25 in the second half, though the Lady Generals would not let Southeastern pull away for a complete blowout. LSU Alexandria got as close as 14 in the fourth quarter before the Lady Lions ended the game with a 14-6 run to secure the final margin.
