CONWAY, Ark. – Despite temperatures in the high 20's and snowy conditions, Anthony Cordero finished eighth and Sophie Daigle placed 14^th to lead the Southeastern Louisiana men's and women's cross country teams Friday morning at the Southland Conference Championships at Beaver Fork Lake in Conway.
 
Cordero, a junior, ran the men's 8K race in 24:23.9. The El Paso, Texas native managed to stay with the group of leaders for the majority of the race until Lamar's Jordan Rowe separated himself from the group to win the race in a time of 24:01.7. The eighth place finish was Cordero's fourth top-10 finish of the season.
 
Daigle finished the women's 6K in 22:05.9. The junior was the top finisher for the Lady Lions in all five races this year. The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native ran a smooth race Friday despite the weather conditions.
 
"Sophie and Tony (Cordero) had great races," said SLU cross country head coach Corey Mistretta. "They gave us a taste of what the entire team can be like when it comes together."
 
The Lions and Lady Lions each finished eighth in the team standings. Lamar won the men's team championship for the 12^th time in 14 years while Central Arkansas claimed their first ever women's title.
 
"I'm very proud of the way our men's and women's teams competed today," said Mistretta. "Obviously, we are disappointed with the team finishes and know we need to get better. But we are all extremely excited about next season. Bringing a few athletes back who we redshirted this season as well as those who were injured will give us a great opportunity to have the best finish in school history on both sides. The future is extremely bright for our distance group and I'm excited about what they are going to bring to the track this season."
 
Southeastern will host the 2020 Cross Country Championships at Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond, Louisiana.
