SLU Continues Strong Fall With Undefeated Showing at Porfino Invitational

Mitrovic, Sleptsova each post 3-0 singles marks, as Lions defeat UWF, USM and Lamar

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team went undefeated in team play at this weekend's Porfino Tennis Invitational.

The tournament was played using a Fed Cup format of four singles matches and one doubles match with each match worth one point. The Lions earned 4-1 victories over Lamar and West Florida, while also defeating Southern Miss, 3-2.

The win over Lamar was perhaps the most impressive, as SLU came from a set down in three of their victories with all four wins versus the league rival Cardinals coming in super tie-breakers.

SLU was a combined 15-5 in singles and doubles play on the successful weekend. Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes was pleased with the team's performance against tough competition.

"Overall this was a great weekend for us versus stiff competition," Hayes said. "We showed a lot of heart coming from behind in several of our wins. We were concerned of how we'd react to being on the road for the second straight week, but I was thrilled with our response."

A pair of freshmen carried the weekend for the Lions. Teodora Mitrovic extended her singles win streak to six matches with another 3-0 week, while fellow first-year Lion Polina Sleptsova also had a 3-0 showing in Pensacola. Juniors Katya Cornejo and Kyra Akinnibi were both 2-0 in singles matches.

"We've continued to play better each time out this fall," Hayes commented. "We've had a busy last two weeks, so we're going to have a light week coming up. We'll then focus on finishing the fall strong at the end of the month."
