CONWAY, Ark. – The Southeastern Louisiana Cross Country team will compete in the 2019 Southland Conference Championships Friday morning at Beaver Fork Lake in Conway.
Â
The women will race at 8:15 a.m. in a 6K with the men to immediately follow at 9:15 running 8K.
Â
On the women's side, SLU's
Sophie Daigle has finished in the top-six in all four races entering Friday. The junior placed fifth at the season-opener at McNeese, sixth at the Rice Invitational, third at LSU and second at Mississippi College. The Donaldsonville, Louisiana native has top ten finishes for her career.Â
Â
Breanna Bernard, also from Donaldsonville, has had a good year for the Lady Lions. The junior has three top-10 finishes this year including fifth at Mississippi College, sixth at McNeese and eighth at LSU.
Â
"The girls have been training great," said SLU distance coach
Rocky Capello. "I think Sophie could contend for a top 10 finish and we could really have some good results. I think we have a chance this year to have one of the best results in school history if we race smart."
Â
On the men's side
Anthony Cordero and
Adam Cortez (both juniors from El Paso, Texas and Franklin High School) have been remarkable for the Lions.
Â
Cordero has three top-5 finishes to his resume after a runner up finish at McNeese, placing third at Mississippi College and fourth at LSU. Cortez has been impressive as well with three top-10 finishes (sixth at McNeese and Rice, seventh at LSU).
Â
"Tony (
Anthony Cordero) and Adam have been terrific all year," said Capello. "But we have some other guys that have come on strong like (freshman) Tom Reynders. He missed a month with an injury and has come back strong. I think this is the best guy's team in my four years here and I think it could show tomorrow."
Â
Lamar comes in as one of the strongest favorites for the men's race winning 11 out of the last 13 conference titles but the University of Central Arkansas is the reigning champions. On the women's side, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi comes in as the defending champions while Stephen F. Austin also comes in with high expectations.
Â
The weather forecast for the race is sunny and clear but the temperature is expected to be 28 degrees at the start of the women's race.
