HAMMOND, La. – After a third place finish in the Mississippi College Invitational Saturday morning,
Anthony Cordero was named Southland Conference Athlete of the Week for the Southeastern Louisiana cross country team, the league office announced Tuesday.
Cordero, a junior, ran the 8K Saturday in 25:23.22 to take third place in a field of 171 at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Mississippi.
The El Paso, Texas native has had a stellar 2019 season finishing in the top 20 in all four races and three top five finishes. The Franklin High School grad placed second at the McNeese Invitational Aug. 30, 17
th at the Rice Invitational Sept. 13 and fourth at LSU Sept. 27 along with last Saturday's third place finish.
"He has really gotten a lot stronger," said SLU assistant cross country and distance coach
Rocky Capello. "He really had a great summer with how much work he put in. We hope, as we put in more speed work in practice, in the next few weeks that it will result in even better times as we get ready for conference."
Cordero will look to ride the momentum into the Southland Conference Championships Friday, Nov. 1 in Conway Arkansas.
