Southeastern Takes Two Titles at Iberostar College Cup

Mitrovic, Insani and Yanez take top billing in second fall tournament

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team competed in its second fall tournament last week, winning singles and doubles medalist honors at the Iberostar College Cup.

The Lions competed with Cleveland State and Wyoming in a round-robin, Fed Cup format. Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes was pleased with his team's progress from the season-opening NSU Invitational several weeks ago.

"We definitely improved from our first time in competition this fall," Hayes commented. "We were much more aggressive in doubles than we have been and we were able to see how different pairings would fare. It was a very positive environment and we had great competition throughout. We came back to Hammond a better team.

Doubles was a huge focus for Southeastern in preparing for the tournament. Putri Insani and Ximena Yanez were 3-0 for the second straight tournament, taking home doubles medalist titles. All told, SLU posted a 7-1 doubles record for the tournament.

"Putri and Ximena just play well together,' Hayes said. "Their individual strengths complement each other. They each have different aspects of their game they excel at and as a result they don't have many holes as a team."

In singles play, Teodora Mitrovic earned medalist honors with a 3-0 finish for the week. Insani and newcomer Kyra Akinnibi each were 2-0 in singles action.

"The competition was very good this week, so we were pleased with the results," Hayes said. "We're facing a tough field at West Florida and we're closing out the fall hosting the George E. Fourmaux Fed Cup Invitational (on Oct. 25-27). We've had a good fall thus far and want to finish strong."
