Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored 37 points off a season-high 31 Southeastern Louisiana turnovers on the way to a 94-63 victory in Southland Conference women's basketball action Wednesday night in Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
SLU (8-11, 3-5 Southland) shot a respectable 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the floor for the game, but SHSU's defensive activity and ability to get to the free-throw line made the difference. The Bearkats (10-8, 5-3 Southland) made 31-of-43 free throws, while the Lady Lions earned just 10 of their attempts, making seven.
Jaclyn Scholvin led Southeastern with 18 points and was one of three Lady Lions in double figures.
Charliee Dugas (16 points) and
Celica Sterling (10 points) joined Scholvin in double figures. Dugas,
Tyler Morrison,
Kyla Williams and
Caitlyn Williams paced SLU with five rebounds each.
Jaylonn Walker made her first six field goals on the way to a game-high 27 points, while Lydia Baxter (20 points, 14 rebounds) posted a double-double for the Bearkats. Amber Leggett and Dominique Maxwell chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively, while La'Sha Haynes added five assists for SHSU.
The Lady Lions started the game strong to take a 9-2 lead early in the game. SHSU battled back to tie the game at 18-18 after the end of the first quarter.
The Bearkats broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 13 points off 10 SLU turnovers in the period. SHSU outscored the Lady Lions, 31-12, in the quarter to take a 49-30 into the break.
SLU would cut the lead to 14 to start the second half, but would get no closer. The Bearkats led by 20 at the end of the third quarter and grew the lead to as much as 32 in the final period.
Southeastern will return home to host Nicholls for a 1 p.m. contest in the University Center on Saturday. Saturday's game will be seen on ESPN3 and can also be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), online at

Saturday will also be Youth Day in the University Center, as all fans 12 and under will receive free admission. Any fans with a valid middle school, junior high or high school ID will receive a $3 ticket.
Morrison will be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 150 fans to the women's game will receive a trading card featuring the Baton Rouge native courtesy of PRIDE.
