Ragin’ Cajuns Top Southeastern in 11 Innings

LAFAYETTE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana dropped its season-high third straight game Wednesday, falling 4-3 to UL Lafayette in 11 innings at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

The Lions (24-13) once again jumped out in front early.

Cody Grosse and Drew Avans knocked back-to-back singles to open the ballgame. With runners on the corners, Grosse scored on a groundout to first by Kyle Schimpf.

As starting pitcher Corey Gaconi rolled through the UL Lafayette (17-17) lineup, Southeastern added to its lead in the fourth.

Trey Morgan, a sophomore from St. Francisville, Louisiana, ripped the first home run of his career. His two-out, solo shot to left put the Lions up, 2-0.

The Ragin' Cajuns knocked Gaconi out of the game in the sixth, scoring three runs to take the lead, but Southeastern responded with a run in the seventh to tie the game.

Brennan Breaud, a junior from Norco, Louisiana, drew a leadoff walk from reliever Dylan Moore, advancing to second on a passed ball. Moore sailed the next pitch to the backstop and Breaud moved up to third, coming home to score on Trenon Trosclair's sacrifice fly to left.

Relievers Will Warren and Jared Biddy combined to hold UL Lafayette scoreless through the ninth, forcing extra innings.

Biddy issued a one-out walk in the 11th to Hayden Cantrelle and Ragin' Cajun cleanup hitter Hunter Kasuls followed with a double down the left-field line, putting a pair in scoring position.

Kennon Fontenot failed to put a bunt down on a suicide squeeze and Lion catcher Daniel Wasinger tagged Cantrelle out at the plate. Fontenot got redemption, though, driving a single to right to plate the winning run.

Michael Leaumont (1-0) earned the win, working a scoreless inning. Biddy (2-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run in 2.2 innings.

Avans (3-for-5), Grosse (2-for-5) and Morgan (2-for-5) led the Lions at the plate.

Southeastern returns to Southland Conference play at 6:30 p.m. Friday with the opener of a three-game series at Northwestern State.
