HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana scored a pair of runs in the first inning Tuesday and never looked back, running away with a 9-3 victory over Tulane at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The win was the sixth straight for Southeastern (19-9) in the series with Tulane (11-15).
Cody Grosse led off the bottom of the first with a triple off the wall in right-center field. He trotted home to score when Tulane's relay throw to third base hit him in the back and rolled away.
Drew Avans picked up a one-out walk and stole second base, tying Grosse for the team lead (13). Avans scored on
Bryce Steckler's two-out double down the right-field line.
Tulane scored an unearned run in the third inning on a passed ball. Acy Owen knocked a one-out single to center field, advancing to third on a two-out double by Grant Witherspoon, before scoring the Green Wave's first run.
Southeastern extended its lead in the fourth.
Opening up the inning,
Daniel Wasinger, a senior from El Paso, Texas, was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a wild pitch before designated hitter
Taylor Schwaner drew a walk. A deep fly ball off the bat of
Brennan Breaud allowed Wasinger to tag and advance to third.
Making just the second start of his career, freshman
Trey Harrington blasted a three-run home run to left field. It was the first of his career and staked starting pitcher
Mason Knopp to a 5-1 lead.
The Lions added a run in the fifth when
Kyle Schimpf scored from second on a pinch-hit single by
Mike Taylor.
Tulane finally touched Knopp for back-to-back hits in the seventh, resulting in a run. Reliever
Jace Nini loaded the bases before striking out Green Wave third baseman Kody Hoese to end the threat.
Southeastern scored three runs in the eighth without a base hit, extending its lead to 9-2. The Green Wave scored an unearned run in the ninth to complete the scoring.
Knopp (2-1) earned the win, allowing two runs – one earned – in six innings of work. He scattered five hits and one walk, striking out four batters. Nini worked a scoreless inning and
Peyton Lee allowed an unearned run in his two-inning stint, striking out three.
Trent Johnson (1-2) suffered the loss, allowed two runs in two innings. He surrendered four hits and one walk.
Harrington (2-for-4) and Schwaner (2-for-3) led the Lions at the plate.
Southeastern returns to the road Thursday, opening a Southland Conference series at McNeese in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
