HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana broke up Matthew McCullough's bid for a no-hitter in the sixth inning Saturday, but ultimately fell to HBU, 10-4, in the middle game of a Southland Conference series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Down 6-0 to the Huskies (9-14, 3-2 Southland) with one out in the sixth,
Trenon Trosclair started a rally for Southeastern (17-9, 6-2 Southland) when he beat out an infield single to the shortstop.
Cody Grosse followed with a single to left-center field, putting runners at first and second.
Brennan Breaud singled to left, driving in Trosclair to break up the shutout.
Drew Avans drove in a pair, following up with a double into the gap in left-center.
The Lions cut the lead in half, 6-3, but HBU responded with three runs of its own in the seventh and tacked on another run in the eight with its fourth home run of the game.
Southeastern loaded the bases in the ninth, scoring a run when third baseman
Preston Faulkner scampered home on a wild pitch.
HBU right fielder Matt Heck, who hit a solo home run in the series opener, smashed a pair of two-run homers Saturday. Huskie shortstop Tyler Depreta-Johnson also homered, hitting a solo shot in the sixth.
McCullough (2-1) earned the win, allowing three runs in 7.2 innings of work. He scattered five hits and hit a pair of batters. The left-hander fanned six and did not issue a walk.
Carlisle Koestler (4-1) suffered the loss, allowing five runs in 3.1 innings. He surrendered five hits and walked one batter.
Seven different players hit safely in the game for Southeastern.
Sunday, Lion redshirt junior righty
Kade Granier (1-2, 4.60) opposes HBU junior right-hander Brady Batten (2-2, 3.07) at 1 p.m. in the rubber match.
The series finale is Sundae Funday and another Local Hero Appreciation Day. The first 75 fans through the gates Sunday will receive free ice cream.
