HAMMOND, La. – Josh Green carried a perfect game into the fifth inning Friday, shutting down Houston Baptist as No. 28-ranked Southeastern Louisiana picked up a 4-1 win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field in the opener of a Southland Conference series.
Southeastern (17-8, 6-1 Southland) provided Green with the lead in the third inning.
Kyle Schimpf, a junior from Covington, Louisiana, smashed his third home run of the season, an opposite-field shot to left, leading off the inning against HBU (8-14, 2-2 Southland) starting pitcher Zach Carter.
The Lions added a pair of runs in the fourth.
Drew Avans led off with a bunt single, advancing to second base when the catcher's throw to first sailed down the line. He moved up to third on
Taylor Schwaner's fly ball to right. After
Daniel Wasinger was hit by a pitch,
Bryce Steckler dropped down a squeeze bunt to plate Avans.
Carter's toss home went to the backstop, allowing Wasinger to advance to third. After Steckler stole second, picking up his 10th steal of the season, Wasinger scored on
Trenon Trosclair's sacrifice fly to right.
Green retired the first batter of the fifth before HBU right fielder Matt Heck knocked an opposite field homer to right, breaking up the perfect game and shutout. After the next batter reached on an error, Green recovered to retire the next two batters.
Southeastern added an insurance run in the seventh.
Jared Biddy retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out the final two batters, to earn his first save of the season.
Green (4-1) earned the win, allowing three hits and one run in eight innings of work. The senior from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, struck out a career-high seven batters and did not issue a walk.
Carter (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing four runs – three earned – in seven innings. He scattered six hits and three walks, fanning three.
Avans (2-for-4) and
Mike Taylor (2-for-4) led the Lions at the plate.
Redshirt junior right-hander
Carlisle Koestler (4-0, 1.16) gets the starting nod Saturday at 2 p.m. versus Huskie senior left-hander Matthew McCullough (1-1, 3.16).
