Jackson State Walks Off with 4-3 Win Over Southeastern

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the ninth inning, picking up a 4-3 walk-off win Wednesday over Southeastern Louisiana at Robert "Bob" Braddy, Sr. Field.

Southeastern (16-8) reliever Trey Shaffer, who retired the first six batters he faced after entering the game in the seventh inning, walked the Jackson State (14-6) leadoff hitter in the ninth. Pinch runner Jaylon Dyer was sacrificed to second base. He scored on a one-out single through the left side by Rahman Williams.

Southeastern reliever Peyton Lee had a 1-2 count on the next hitter when an errant pickoff attempt allowed Williams to advance to second. Lee retired the hitter on a fly ball to left, but walked the No. 9 hitter in the order and was behind 2-0 on the next hitter when Lions' head coach Matt Riser brought in reliever Will Warren.

A freshman from Brandon, Mississippi, Warren's first two pitches were balls, completing the walk to load the bases. His next pitch kicked past catcher Evan Pace to the backstop, allowing the winning run to score.

In all, Southeastern squandered a three-run lead.

Bryce Steckler led off the second inning with a single to left. After Pace was hit by a one-out pitch, he and Steckler executed a double steal to put both in scoring position. Steckler scored on a throwing error by the Jackson State catcher.

Trenon Trosclair drew a walk to open the third inning, scoring on Drew Avans' fourth home run of the season. The blast to right field put the Lions up, 3-0.

Southeastern starting pitcher Mason Knopp walked the leadoff hitter in the bottom of the inning. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and ground out. A two-out triple to right-center field put the Tigers on the board, 3-1.

Jackson State pulled within a run on a solo home run to lead off the sixth off Knopp.

Jose Tirado (1-1) earned the win for Jackson State, working a scoreless ninth. Shaffer (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs in 2.1 innings.

Avans led the Lions at the plate with a 2-for-5 effort, driving in two.

Southeastern returns home Friday, hosting Houston Baptist in the opener of a three-game, Southland Conference series at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
