No. 2-seeded Lions Face New Orleans in Opening Round of Southland Tournament

SUGAR LAND, Texas – No. 2-seeded Southeastern Louisiana faces No. 7-seeded New Orleans at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Constellation Field in an opening round matchup at the 2017 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament.
 
Southeastern (35-18, 20-10 Southland) also faced the Privateers (28-26-1, 16-14 Southland) in the opening round of the tournament last season, with the Lions claiming a 5-4 walk-off victory over UNO.
 
Fans wishing to the see the team off to Sugar Land are encouraged to show up outside the Dugas Center for Southeastern Athletics by 11:45 a.m. Tuesday.
 
The tournament opens Wednesday with a 9 a.m. contest between No. 3-seeded Sam Houston State and No. 6-seeded Stephen F. Austin. The other side of the bracket includes No. 1-seeded McNeese facing No. 8-seeded Lamar at 4 p.m. and No. 4-seeded Houston Baptist against No. 5-seeded Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
 
For the third consecutive season, every game of the Southland tournament will be carried live by ESPN3, ESPN's live multi-screen sports network.

It is accessible online at WatchESPN.com, plus on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN and ESPN apps. Games can also be streamed via Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Sling TV, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Wednesday, the Lions will send junior right-hander Mac Sceroler (9-1, 2.83) to the mound opposite UNO junior righty Shawn Semple (9-3, 2.75).
 
Southeastern will stick with its weekend rotation through the first three games of the tournament, with sophomore right-hander Corey Gaconi (6-4, 2.45) slated for Thursday and redshirt sophomore righty Carlisle Koestler (4-3, 4.35) tabbed for Friday.
 
Taylor Schwaner (.321), Drew Avans (.313), Derrick Mount (.300), Carson Crites (.296) and Ryan Byers (.277) lead Southeastern at the plate. Crites and Schwaner are the Southland leaders with 13 home runs. Schwaner ranks seventh nationally with 68 RBIs. Mount is also seventh nationally with eight sacrifice flies. Avans ranks 11th nationally with 25 stolen bases.
 
The Lions are hitting .257 as a team, with 89 doubles, 18 triples and 48 home runs. Their 103 stolen bases rank eighth nationally. Southeastern's pitching staff enters the tournament with a 3.93 ERA, having fanned 379 batters through 472.1 innings of work. Opponents are hitting a Southland-low .247 off Lion pitching.
 
Southeastern, which swept its series against UNO, split a pair of non-conference games with Seton Hall to wrap up the regular season.
 
John Cable (.358), Owen Magee (.313) and Samuel Capielano (.312) lead the Privateers at the plate. Orynn Veillon is tied with Schwaner and Crites for the conference lead in homers, and has driven in a team-best 51 runs. Aaron Palmer has swiped a team-high 15 bags.
 
UNO is hitting .293 as a team, with 104 doubles, 14 triples, 51 home runs and 36 stolen bases. The Privateer pitching staff has compiled a 4.39 ERA, striking out 432 batters in 487.2 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .265 off UNO pitching.
 
The Privateers swept a three-game conference series at Northwestern State to climb into the tournament field.
 
Set up in similar fashion to the NCAA College World Series, the Southland Conference Baseball Tournament features a pair of four-team double-elimination brackets. But unlike in Omaha, bracket winners meet in a single game to decide the championship.
 
The victor of the Southland tournament is the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament. The selection show airs Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m., CT, on ESPNU.
