Final Stats
HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana juniors
Lucia Bustamante and
Natalie Duran each picked up singles victories, but it was not enough as the Lions dropped a 5-2 decision to Incarnate Word in Southland Conference women's tennis action as part of Super Lion Saturday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
The Lions fell to 3-11 overall and 0-7 in Southland Conference play with the loss. UIW improved to 5-15 overall and 2-5 in conference play by taking the doubles point and four singles matches.
Southeastern continues to play with a depleted lineup, as juniors
Dalina Dahlmans and
Ceci Mercier remain out with injury.
"We play as hard as we can each time out and for that I'm proud of our team," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "But all that effort can't offset the mistakes we continue to make. We're going to continue fighting and hopefully, we can clean up some of those mistakes."
In doubles play, SLU juniors
Fleur Holtkamp and
Madina Vorotnikova improved to 2-0 as a team with a 6-3 victory over Victoria Kareh and Sarah Savedra on the No. 2 court. However, the visiting Cardinals countered with wins on courts 1 and 3 to take the lead.
Bustamante was too much for Savedra on No. 4 in singles play, earning a 6-4, 6-3 victory. On No. 5, Duran handled Alejandra Tamayo, 6-3, 6-3.
UIW clinched the match with straight set wins on the No. 1, 3 and 6 courts. On No. 2, Rachel Sadiq outlasted Raygadas, 7-6, 1-6, 10-7 to provide the final 5-2 margin.
Southeastern will be back in action on Monday, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 1 p.m. Free jambalaya will be available in conjunction with the match.
