Lions Sweep UNO in Pontchartrain Bowl, Extend Win Streak to Seven

NEW ORLEANS, La. – Southeastern Louisiana extended its winning streak to seven games Sunday at Maestri Field, knocking off New Orleans, 4-2, in Southland Conference action to sweep the third annual Pontchartrain Bowl.

The Lions (11-4, 2-0 Southland) struck early, scoring in the first, and weathered repeated attempts by UNO (9-7, 0-3 Southland) to tie up the game.

Center fielder Jacob Seward, a senior from New Orleans, led off the game by beating out a chopper to the shortstop. After Seward stole second base, Privateer starting pitcher Riley Hodge (0-1) walked Drew Avans and Carson Crites to load the bases.

With one out, Derrick Mount squibbed a ground ball down the line and off the first-base bag to drive in a pair of runs.

Southeastern extended its lead to 3-0 in the third, with Mount, a senior from Saucier, Mississippi, driving in Crites with a sacrifice fly to left field.

UNO scored a pair of unearned runs in the fourth and fifth, pulling within 3-2. Lions starting pitcher Kade Granier (1-2) pitched out of both innings, stranding the potential tying run on base in the fourth.

Sophomore left-hander Payton Robinson picked up the final out of the sixth in relief of Granier, stranding the potential tying and go ahead runs on base.

The Lions added an insurance run in the seventh. After designated hitter Webb Bobo was hit by a one-out pitch, pinch-runner Trenon Trosclair stole second and then scored on Seward's RBI double to right-center field.

In the eighth, with the potential tying run on base and one out, reliever Bryce Tassin induced Privateer catcher John Cable to hit into an inning-ending double play.

Tassin retired the side in order in the ninth to earn the first save of his career.

Granier picked up the win, allowing two unearned runs in 5.2 innings of work. Hodge suffered the loss, allowing three runs in four innings pitched.
Crites (2-for-3) and Seward (2-for-4) led the Lions at the plate. Mount (1-for-3) drove in three.

Southeastern returns to action at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Mobile, Alabama, traveling to play South Alabama.
