HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana juniors
Dalina Dahlmans,
Fleur Holtkamp and
Natalie Duran each won both in singles and doubles play to lead the Lion Tennis team to a 5-2 victory over LSU-Alexandra in the spring opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
Southeastern (1-0) won two of three doubles matches to take the doubles point, then clinched the win over LSU-A (0-1) with four victories in singles play.
"We started out playing very nervous and we just didn't play our best tennis," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "We were down a couple of players, so it was important to win the doubles point against a tough LSU-A team.
"We settled down and played much better in singles play," Hayes added. "But we need to keep working harder in practice and expect to play our best tennis when we walk out there."
In doubles play, Dahlmans and Holtkamp continued their momentum from an impressive fall with a 6-1 victory over Sara Andrade and Gisela Amor on the No. 1 court. At No. 2, Duran and junior
Lucia Bustamante held off Laia Charles and Betsabet Vasquez Hidalgo, 7-6, to give Southeastern a 1-0 lead.
Three Lions helped SLU clinch the win with straight-set victories. In her first match on the top singles court, junior
Dany Raygadas handled Andrade, 6-3, 6-2. Dahlmans was too much for Vasquez Hidalgo in a 6-0, 6-1 victory on No. 4. On No. 5, Duran made short work of Paula Gordillo, 6-2, 6-0.
In her Southeastern dual match debut, Holtkamp had to shake off a rough first set to earn her first win as a Lion. Holtkamp defeated Charles, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 to provide the final 5-2 margin.
Southeastern will open the road portion of its spring schedule on Friday with a 3:30 p.m. match at Louisiana-Lafayette.
