Lions Hold Third Spring Scrimmage

HAMMOND, La. – Donovan Isom and D'Shaie Landor both threw touchdown passes and Julius Maracalin and Da'Quan Smith added a pair on the ground as the Southeastern Louisiana football team held its third scrimmage of the spring Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

The Lions went just under 100 plays in the two-hour scrimmage. Southeastern will hold two more practices, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, before wrapping up the spring with its annual Spring Game in Strawberry Stadium Saturday at 2 p.m.

"I thought our (number) one offense and our one defense dominated the day," Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts said. "When we went head-to-head early, it was a pretty good competition. When it was the ones going on the twos, both sides dominated each other. I think the offense scored the last four, five possessions and the defense got out of there at times so that was good to see. I think our ones have settled in. The big part is obviously your depth and we have to find the next guy who is going to step up because they are going to have to play."

Landor and Isom saw the vast majority of snaps behind center. Landor found Brandon Acker on a 34-yard strike while Isom directed the Lions on a 14-play, 95-yard drive culminating in an 8-yard scoring pass.

Eugene Bethea, Maracalin and Kaelyn Henderson got the bulk of the carries. Maracalin scored Southeastern's first touchdown of the day on a 5-yard run and later popped off a 20-yard run. Smith took an option pitch from Landor around the left side for a 60-yard score late in the scrimmage.

"We're physical at running back," Roberts said. "The guys run hard and for the most part protected the football. I thought the offensive line was a real physical group and they've done that all spring-long."

The defense dominated early, keeping the offense out of the end zone on its first eight possessions, all from the 40-yard line and in. The Lions forced a fumble on an option pitch and Derrick Raymond later picked off a Landor pass in the end zone.

"The thing will be competing every day and hopefully some of the guys who are in the question mark category, we can get in the can-do category and we have three more days to get that done," Roberts said as the Lions wrap up their 15-day spring this week.
