UNO Edges Lions, 4-3

Villlarreal, Raygadas, Vorotnikova earn singles wins in narrow loss

Final Results - New Orleans 4, Southeastern Louisiana 3

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana senior Renee Villarreal, sophomore Dany Raygadas and sophomore Madina Vorotnikova each earned singles victories, but it was not enough, as New Orleans earned a tightly-contested 4-3 victory over the Lions in Southland Conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

Southeastern fell to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in Southland Conference play with the loss. UNO (11-4, 5-3 Southland) split the six singles matches with the Lions with the difference in the match coming in doubles play.

"We fought hard today and this was a very good Southland Conference match," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "We were on the right side of some 4-3 decisions earlier this season and these last two haven't gone our way.

"I was really proud of how we bounced back after losing the doubles point," Hayes added. "The fact that we were in it with a chance to win in singles play is a good indication of how much we've improved over the last year."

In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Villarreal and sophomore Dalina Dahlmans (13-2, 7-1 Southland) continued their dominance on the feature court, handling the UNO pairing of Soledad Calderon and Anna Segarra Rius, 6-2. But the Privateers picked up 6-4 wins on courts 2 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead.

UNO would extend that lead in singles play, going ahead, 3-0, with straight-set victories on courts 2 and 5. Southeastern would not go away quietly, however.

Vorotnikova (9-5, 6-3 Southland) put Southeastern on the board on the No. 6 court, defeating Brittany Johnson, 6-2, 6-3. On court 3, Raygadas (10-7, 4-5 Southland) pulled the Lady Lions to within 3-2 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Anja Luethi. The final two matches would be decided in three sets.

On No. 1, Villarreal (13-3, 8-1 Southland) rallied past Segarra Rius for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win to tie the match at 3-3. The Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico native is now 68-9 in singles play in her Lion career and is fourth on the program's career singles victories list.

The match came down to the No. 4 court and another three-set affair. In a hard-fought match, UNO's Trang Dao outlasted Lion sophomore Lucia Bustamante (7-10, 2-7 Southland), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, to give the Privateers the victory.

Southeastern will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Alcorn State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
