Five-Run Sixth Propels No. 22-Ranked UL Lafayette Past Southeastern

Lions drop series

HAMMOND, La. – No. 22-ranked UL Lafayette scored five runs in the sixth inning Sunday, rallying to defeat Southeastern Louisiana, 5-4, at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field and claim the non-conference series.

Southeastern (26-11) led, 3-0, over the Ragin' Cajuns (24-12) before the outburst.

Lion shortstop Brennan Breaud beat out a bunt single to open up the bottom of the first, and advanced to second on a groundout. After first baseman Jameson Fisher was hit by a pitch, second baseman Carson Crites advanced both runners into scoring position with a grounder to third base.

Left fielder Drew Avans gave Southeastern the lead, pulling a two-run single through the right side to plate Breaud and Fisher.

Crites smashed a two-out, solo home run in the fifth, extending the Lions' lead.

Starting pitcher Domenick Carlini worked in and out of trouble through the first five innings, getting help from his defense with a pair of double plays.

The Ragin' Cajuns chased Carlini in the sixth with three-consecutive hits, leaving with a 3-1 lead. UL Lafayette reached relievers Pat Cashman (3-2) and Kade Granier to tie the game and then take the lead.

Southeastern pulled within a run in the seventh. Designated hitter Daniel Midyett was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Fisher drew a walk to chase reliever Eric Carter.

Crites sacrificed both runners into scoring position and Midyett scored on Avans sacrifice fly to left.

Granier and UL Lafayette reliever Dylan Moore shut down the bats for the remainder of the game.

Ragin' Cajun starter Nick Lee (6-1) earned the win, surrendering three runs in five innings. Moore earned his ninth save of the season, tossing three hitless innings. Cashman was tagged with the loss.

Avans (2-for-4), Crites (2-for-3) and Taylor Schwaner (2-for-4) led Southeastern at the plate.

The Lions return to the road Wednesday, traveling to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to face No. 9-ranked LSU at Alex Box Stadium in a game televised by the SEC Network+.
