Lady Lions’ Williams Picks Up Southland Track AOW Award

FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana track and field squads continue to spread the wealth as far as the Southland Conference Athlete of the Week awards are concerned.

Senior sprinter Sharrona Williams became the sixth different Southeastern athlete to be honored by the conference in 2016 after being voted the Southland Women's Track Athlete of the Week on Wednesday.

The Westmoreland, Jamaica native helped the Lady Lions capture their first team title of the 2016 season at the McNeese Spring Time Classic on Saturday. Williams picked up her first career win in the 100 in a personal-best 11.67 seconds, then went on to place second in the 200 in 24.12. She also helped the 4x100 relay come in third in 46.16 seconds. Her 100 time is the best in the Southland and tied for 80th nationally in 2016 while the 200 time is the sixth-best in the conference.

"Sharrona has been training very hard," Southeastern head coach Sean Brady said. "She's a senior who has overcome several obstacles over the last few years. I'm excited she is beginning to run to her potential and there is more left for her. She has the talent to be a conference champion, regional qualifier and perhaps the school record holder in the 100."

Williams already holds two school records set at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships in February. She broke the record in the 60 meters with a time of 7.56 in the preliminaries before earning third-team All-Southland honors in 7.60 in the finals. She went on to set the record for the 200 with a fifth-place time of 24.36.

Williams joins senior thrower Jermisha Frazier – the Field Athlete of the Week for the second week - as Lady Lions honored this outdoor season. Sophomore pole vaulter Devin King has three Men's Field Athlete of the Week awards combined over the indoor and outdoor seasons while junior jumper Steven Barze and senior thrower Alex Young (both Men's Field) and junior sprinter Dontrell Lyons (Men's Track) were recognized during the indoor season.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week honors went to Sam Houston State heptathlete Courtney Lord on Wednesday. Northwestern State swept the men's awards with sophomore sprinter Amir James winning for track and senior jumper Aaron Williams for the field.

Southeastern will host the Southeastern Lion Invitational Friday and Saturday. The meet is being held in conjunction with Southeastern's Super Lion Saturday which also features home events by the baseball, softball and football teams as well as the LAA Green and Gold 5K Run.
