Madina Vorotnikova each won both of their singles matches, as the Lion tennis team split its final two road matches of the 2015-16 regular season on Saturday.
The Lions (11-6, 5-3 Southland) opened the day with a narrow 4-3 loss to Northwestern State (7-9, 3-3 Southland) in Natchitoches. After dropping the doubles point, Southeastern split the six singles matches with the Lady Demons. Villarreal (12-3, 7-1 Southland), Duran (4-1, 1-1 Southland) and Vorotnikova (8-5, 5-3 Southland) each won in straight sets for SLU.
"We've been on the winning side of three 4-3 matches this spring, but today wasn't our day," Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes said. "Losing the doubles point hurt, but we played well enough in singles to have a chance. But Northwestern State didn't give us anything and was just a little better than us today."
On the way home from Natchitoches, Southeastern stopped in Alexandria to defeat LSU-Alexandria (8-4), 7-0. The Lions won all three doubles matches and six singles matches for the shutout victory.
"It was nice to see us bounce back," Hayes said. "LSU-A is a well-coached team that we have a lot of respect for."
NSU took the early lead with doubles victories on the No. 1 and 2 courts. On No. 1, the Lion team of Villarreal and sophomore
Dalina Dahlmans (12-2, 6-1 Southland) saw their eight-match win streak snapped by the Lady Demon pair of Natalya Krutova and Polina Ivanova, 6-4.
Southeastern knotted the score in singles play on the No. 1 court. Villarreal handled Krutova, 6-2, 6-4, to even the score, 1-1. NSU answered by winning straight-set matches on courts 2 and 4 to go ahead, 3-1.
On No. 5, Duran took a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Barbora Kollarova. Vorotnikova evened the match by defeating Alzbeta Veverkova, 6-3, 6-2, on No. 6.
The match came down to a three-set affair on the No. 3 singles court. NSU's Polina Mutel rallied past SLU sophomore
Dany Raygadas (9-7, 3-5 Southland) for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 triumph to secure the 4-3 victory for the Lady Demons.
Southeastern was dominant in the 7-0 victory over the Generals. On the No. 1 doubles court, Dahlmans and Villarreal defeated Gisela Amor and Sara Andrade, 6-0. Sophomores
Lucia Bustamante and
Ceci Mercier (7-7, 2-5 Southland) handled the LSU-A duo of Paula Giordilla and Claudia van den Brink, 6-3 on No. 2. The Lion pair of Raygadas and sophomore
Margaux Kaltenbacher (9-6, 5-2 Southland) completed the doubles sweep on No. 3 with a 6-0 win over Betsa Vasquez and Nicolette Uscocovich.
In singles play, SLU picked up six straight-set wins. On No. 1, Villarreal handled Amor, 6-3, 6-0, to extend her singles winning streak to five matches. The reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week is now 67-9 in singles play in her Lion career, moving her past former Lions Nina Knavs (2005-08) and Iris Muller (1989-92) into sole possession of fourth place on the school's career singles victories list.
Dahlmans (7-8, 3-5 Southland) made short work of Giordilla, 6-1, 6-0, on the No. 2 court. On No. 3, Raygadas was too much for Andrade, 6-1, 6-0.
The Lions had similar success on the bottom three courts. On No. 4, Bustamante (7-9, 2-6 Southland) swept Vasquez, 6-3, 6-1, which was the same score Duran defeated van den Brink by on No. 5. Vorotnikova completed the shutout with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Liz Arens on No. 6.
Southeastern will return to action on Friday, hosting Arkansas State at 11 a.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.
